Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Man United, Arsenal and Chelsea have decided to leave the Super League. The Super League is a very controversial competition initiated by several big clubs including Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan and several others. It’s being led by Florentino Perez, the owner of Real Madrid FC and the point of the Super League is to generate more money for the big teams in order to help sustain them. They plan to only let the top teams of each league play in the Super League and those who don’t have the budget to play have to compete in the Europa and UEFA Champions League. It was called by several people the “end of soccer” as it diminished the importance of soccer. Everyone loves underdogs and minor teams rising from the dust and beating the big teams. In this case, only the popular teams would face each other in midweek matches. Footballing legends such as Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes protested against this idea and ridiculed it. Many expressed their disappointment for this decision through huge uproars. After tremendous pressure, Arsenal issued a public apology talking about how they committed a huge mistake. However, Florentino Perez still stands strong by his decision and plans to create his own world cup for countries. I honestly love football a lot and hearing this decision a couple days ago was a huge shock to me. It was quite unexpected but it was actually planned discreetly from a long time ago. Currently Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid are the only clubs to remain a part of the Super League proposition and (1)“could face the UEFA disciplinary process for, among other things, violating Article 51 of the statutes, which states that “No combinations or alliances between… clubs affiliated, directly or indirectly, to different UEFA Member Associations may be formed without the permission of UEFA." Therefore, they are being threatened by the UEFA Committee to partake a 2 year-long ban.
